New England is known for sports. We are considered one of the most successful regions in the United states from our 7 Superbowl trophies to our 6 Stanley Cup titles. Names such as Larry Bird and Tom Brady are common in the average New England household.
Sports are everywhere. Not just on the TV but, on our phones, in newspapers and even on our car radio.
If your parents are avid sports fans then you probably know what it is like listening to the car radio on the way to school and all you heard was a middle aged Bostonian man yelling about how the Boston Red Sox can’t make a good trade to save their life, or, something along those lines.
This raises the question of, have you ever heard a woman on one of these radio stations?
Most people would say that they haven’t.
Even in Massachusetts; one of the most progressive states of the country, most of the attention is targeted toward the men of the sports industry. This includes radio stations and podcasts.
This article was originally supposed to be a list of some female run sports podcasts stationed out of New England, however, It has been extremely difficult to complete this task.
Though there is really no irregular stigma around having a women run podcast, it is still a challenge for women to become successful.
Like most things in the sports industry, radio shows and podcasts are mainly targeted to a male audience so catering to a female audience is a mostly foreign concept.
But with this; I still remain hopeful that the amount of women in the sports media will grow and that sports will evolve. Where they don’t have to cater to a gendered audience and make it an inclusive and even more diverse industry.
