Usually when we read books for class in school, they aren’t entirely captivating. You kind of just read them to pass the course and they typically aren’t something you would tend to pick up and read if you had the choice. During my English class this year, we read a book in class titled I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, by Erika Sánchez. Unlike other books I’ve had to read for classes in the past, this was a phenomenal book and I truly couldn’t stop reading.
From the start of the book to the very last page I was immersed in this book. It included several different elements of literature in it. These include mystery, fear, angst and comfort, as well as bringing up very meaningful topics. Those topics being things such as family values, race, honesty, discovering yourself, etc;.
I genuinely believe that I have never finished a book so fast, let alone one we had to read for school. I soon realized though, that “had to” turned into a “want to” when I couldn’t put the book down. Almost every night I found myself reading this book before bed, something I have rarely done in the past. If your teacher is having you read I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, by Erika Sánchez this year, give it a good try at first. This is only my opinion, but I do think this book was amazing. It may take you a chapter or so to really become invested in the book, but that happens with all good books I believe.
