Even though winter sports are pretty popular like Wrestling, Basketball, Hockey, Track and field there is a team that became foreign to Oliver Ames till it´s recovery this year. Every Wednesday in the dance studio/yoga room after school the dance team meets. So what is dance team?
When asking English teacher and advisor, Mrs. Schleicher about what dance team was she says ¨A group of students who got together to sort of unite based on shared interest in dance itself. Many students dance at other studios which sort of create a division but then there are so many kids who devote so much time into the activity outside of school that they thought bringing it together to OA would add to this tiger home.¨
Because the freshman Joise Dubeau, who came to Mrs. Schleicher, knowing that she worked at a dance studio and danced when growing up, approached her with the idea of a dance team this club wouldn’t be what it is. What pushed Mrs. Schleicher to say yes was her feeling that ¨anytime a student wants to pursue something and is willing to reach out, get a group of kids together and to take initiative that they should be supported with that.¨
The dance team does not do competitions because they are new right now and haven’t done any performances yet. They want to do pep rallies and to be out in the OA public eye more. For now the dance team is just getting a feel for each other in the studio setting. In terms of competing they sort of would never be able to do that due to many of the members already competing for different studios.
Mrs. Schleicher has been passionate about dance for a long time. Her love for the activity impacts her teaching. She tells us that she thinks it’s a good outlet. When looking back on where her love for dance started she says ¨I wasn’t the kind of person who was competitive as a kid in terms of athletics. I wasn’t going to chase down another kid on the soccer field to get the ball from them because I just didn’t care that much. So everyone needs a sort of outlet and this one is creative and engaging. It’s fun and active what I look for with my own students in that setting.¨
So Come and join and try! The OA dance team has a variety of levels! For the first actual time dancing and in past times everybody was super supportive. Whether they didn’t know how to do something or someone did know how to do something. Mrs. Schleicher and other dancers are able to break a couple things down to a creative understanding. The dance team believes in trying new things out and laughing it all off to keep enjoying the fun.
