Reddit. Statistically, it may be one of the most popular websites to date, but that doesn’t mean people actually like it. The site still has some fans, but it’s really either loved or hated. People tend to have some strong opinions about this site.
For a while, Reddit was a normal website for people to find others like them and to chat about whatever they wanted. That was, until it became very popular for offensive material. Racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia are just a few to name.
As well as the offensive material that was meant to hurt people, there was also a lot of NSFW (not safe for work) material on the site. This is incredibly inappropriate since the website is marketed towards young teens, ages 13 and older. A 13 year old on reddit would have free access to any of the inappropriate and NSFW material. What if a child lies about their age to formulate an account on the website? There could be kids even younger than the age of 13 on Reddit, and there’s no way for anyone to even really know.
If you can look past all the bad things circulating the deep corners of this website, then maybe it’s not so bad. A positive for this site is how easy it is to ask other users for help/for their opinion on something. It’s common for a lot of people to solely use this site to get advice from strangers without bias. This can definitely help a lot of people when they don’t understand something or help those who just need some guidance in general.
There is definitely some innocent content on Reddit. This innocent content includes viral memes, trends, and even just regular news reports. As well as the pleasing aspect of the site where you can ask other like-minded people for advice. Some people feel more comfortable talking to strangers on the internet than they do talking to people they know face to face. It can often lessen the feeling of embarrassment and shame someone feels when talking about something. Having another person there for you, even if it is a stranger, can be really nice. It’s a common mutual dynamic between these users on Reddit. Some help and respond to others’ questions and confessions, while others do the confessing and asking.
In all honesty, Reddit doesn’t have a great reputation on the internet because the bad things tend to oversee the good. Whatever you’re using Reddit for, there’s likely to always be a mix of good and bad media on the website.
