Homework is a matter that has raised a lot of commotion between two groups of people: people who think homework is beneficial and people who think homework is detrimental. Oliver Ames High School contains a mix of these two groups of people, and some have agreed to express their opinions.
Ella Rivers emphasizes, “I think homework is very beneficial. Although many students beg to differ, I feel that homework allows me to do a lot of practice and therefore, I am able to internalize what I am learning in class.”
Some students have found homework to be beneficial to their learning experience because it allows them to practice the concepts they have learned in class. Many students believe that you will not be able to succeed if you cannot practice the information. On the other hand, some students are finding it difficult to keep a stable social life with the amount of homework they are receiving, especially on the weekends.
Elizabeth O’brien expresses, “I think homework is beneficial, but only to a certain extent. Too much homework can be detrimental to students’ social lives and there should be less homework because it will allow students to have a good balance between social and academic interests.”
There are also some students who are in between whether or not homework is beneficial to their learning experience at Oliver Ames.
Sarah Cathie states, “I find homework somewhat beneficial because, for example, in chemistry, we get worksheets that allow us to practice what we have learned in class.” Opposingly, Sarah feels “homework is not beneficial when it does not pertain to what we learned in class, or if we receive no context on how to complete the problems, especially in math.”
Although homework seems to be helping students learn new material, the amount may need to be tweaked. Some students seemed to be stressed because every class gives out homework without thinking about students’ extracurricular activities, jobs, and homework in other classes. In addition, seniors are overwhelmed with all of the college applications and essays that need to be done before November 1st, which is also the end of term one. Teachers may need to reassess the quantity of work they are giving students to compete after school and over the weekend, which is some students’ only free time to relax.
Tune in next time to find out what the teachers think about the amount of homework that is given to students!
