Kelly Cavanaugh, OA’s new principal, said that her first days on the job “exceeded her expectations” and the opening went smoothly.
In an interview on opening day, Cavanaugh talked about the pressure of expectations replacing long-time principal Mr. Paul and about the current mask situation.
“I definitely felt some pressure following Mr. Paul however, that helped motivate me even more to do the best job I can.”
Mrs. Cavanaugh expressed her gratitude towards OA’s welcoming environment and great culture created by the staff and students. Cavanaugh talked about her excitement to meet the students and get to know them, even in the masked era we currently live in.
“The mask’s are a small thing for me, I wish I could see everyone’s face but I’m just happy everyone is here.”
The amount of respect demonstrated throughout the day and the culture that surrounded her was amazing. She was highly impressed by the way students and faculty presented themselves and their work ethic.
When the topic of masks were brought up Mrs. Cavanaugh was quick to point out that she was a little saddened that she couldn’t see all of her students’ faces on her first day. However she was very adamant about how she is happy to see everyone being responsible during this difficult time and helping to ensure the safety of the members of OA.
“I wish I could just pull everyone’s mask off and see their faces, but I’m very happy to see everyone being responsible and wearing their mask.”
When asked if the new position filled her with any anxiety or stress she assured me that it can make her a little anxious but mostly she feels empowered and excited to seek out any issues in Oliver Ames so that they can be fixed asap.
Mrs. Cavanaugh ended the interview saying she was incredibly happy to be a part of such a wonderful school and that she plans on doing whatever it takes to make OA the best it can be, and to keep it safe.
