The Battle Of The Fries

April 15, 2021 By The Daily Olivian

Whether it was a debate between the best cook of the family or the best local restaurant that age-old battle has always remained relevant. While I may not be a professional food critic, when it comes to fries I might as well be. Today’s competitors consist of Wendy’s and Five Guys.

  • Wendy’s Fries
  • Five Guys Fries

The first category for comparison has to be the answer to your mother’s favorite question, “You got fast food money?” Well, this is when you find out if you do. For Wendys the price of fries are roughly the following:

Natural-Cut FriesSmall$2.06
Natural-Cut FriesMedium$2.43
Natural-Cut FriesLarge$2.67

And for Five Guys the average prices are presented below:

FriesLittle$3.77
FriesRegular$5.11
FriesLarge$7.06

Wendy’s may have unbeatable prices compared to Five Guys the volume provided must be considered. While Wendy’s undeniably has cheaper prices the volume provided is significantly reduced.

Aside from volume and price the most important decision-making factor: The taste. For Wendy’s when it’s good it’s great but when it’s not… not so much. If you get lucky and you get fresh hot fries Wendy’s fries are above average. They’re warm and salty and they have a great crispy to soft potato ratio because of how thinly sliced they are. However, when you get unlucky, which is notable more often than not, they become bland and soggy.

On the other hand, because Five Guys makes their fries to order they are always warm and they have the perfect amount of saltiness and crispy to potato ratio. They are a little thicker than Wendy’s but because of said freshness, it works. Also, they deserve an honorable mention for fry length due to Five Guys consistently have very long french fries.

Overall considering, taste, crispiness, and volume for price the winner of the battle of french fries has to go to Five Guys.
