I recently met with OA Principal Mr. Paul, discussing back-to-school plans, and asking questions that students have.
One of the biggest changes to our system will be the new distancing standards, as desks will be three feet apart, not six feet. Mr. Paul explained how this change will not affect the contact tracing/“close contact” system. Therefore, because we will be closer together, more students will likely have to quarantine as “close contacts” if someone within six feet of them, for more than 15 minutes, tests positive for Covid. But, Mr. Paul stated that both “close contacts” and students who test positive for Covid will have the option to learn remotely for the time that they are quarantining.
Next, I asked about college visits, something that upperclassmen, especially seniors, are thinking about. As stated in a past senior letter, Mr. Paul reconfirmed that juniors and seniors who provide proof of a college visit, will have the option to learn remotely while they quarantine after the visit. So far, the school has only stated that this is allowed for the week of April vacation, as they do not want an influx of spontaneous college visits.
Lastly, I addressed the lunch situation. Mr. Paul said that on warmer days, “students will be able to spread out (outside)” and “if students want to go outside, and sit up against the wall, or sit on the curb, things of that nature, they can.” Also, different classes will be assigned to have lunch in various locations, such as the cafeteria, the Nixon Gymnasium, and possibly the auditorium. The lunch location of a class will remain consistent through the rest of the year. Some students may feel nervous about having friends in your lunch location, but I really don’t think it’s worth worrying about. Mr. Paul and the OA administration are truly trying their best to keep us both safe and happy.
As we shift toward a more “normal” school year, Mr. Paul seeks to emphasize the less compromising rules regarding remote vs. in-person learning. Throughout this year, in-person students have stayed home on various occasions due to fear of rising cases or even after simply waking up late. This will not be allowed anymore, as in-person students will not have the option to temporarily stay home unless for a directly covid related reason. The return to school may be difficult at first, but the OA administration is dedicated to making it as smooth as possible.
If you have any more questions about the return to school, Mr. Paul is almost always available for a quick conversation in the hallways, and your teachers may have answers as well.
