On Sunday, the 78th annual Golden Globes took place, well, everywhere! Comedians Amy Poehler and Tina Fey were the hosts, though they were both in different cities. Poehler was in Los Angeles, while Fey was in New York. The nominees were brought on screen via Zoom, and, as expected, it was not the best quality.
The most notable technical difficulty of the night was from Daniel Kaluuya, who was muted while he was giving his speech. When he found out, he played it off with some jokes, and eventually got to make his speech for all to hear. Like I said, this kind of stuff is expected, but it’s definitely not fun to watch.
Later on in the evening, Chadwick Boseman won Best Actor for his final role in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. There were several tributes of the night from many actors, but the most touching was probably from his wife, accepting his award on his behalf.
History was made at the awards ceremony as Chloé Zhao won Best Director for her film Nomadland. She is the first Chinese woman to win this award, and the second woman ever. Her film also won Best Film Drama.
As most of us know, the Golden Globes usually include a wide range of actors in the audience. This year, the audience was full of first responders and essential workers as a ‘thank you’ for the work they have done during the pandemic.
This year’s Golden Globes was… interesting to say the least. The tributes to Chadwick Boseman were very heartwarming and emotional, it definitely proved that he was loved as an actor and person. To me, and most others, it was the highlight of the night to acknowledge his work.
Based on the numerous technical difficulties and the awkwardness of talking to each other, the ceremony obviously could have gone better. The ratings for the show were terrible, and many people who did watch it did not find it as enjoyable as it has been in the past. Oh well, I suppose I can’t really blame them, it’s not really anyone’s fault. Hopefully next year’s show will be back to normal!
