With the disadvantages of COVID-19, most people would think that it would be a lot harder for incoming freshmen. Most students have different thoughts about hybrid-learning. This year is very different but personally, I think we would all like it to go back to normal.
I am Adrianna Beauregard, a freshman at Oliver Ames. I am apart of the student council and I write for the Daily Olivian. I expected something totally different from high school than what it actually is. I expected high school to be what it is in movies, you could say it sounds unrealistic and silly but see I have never had a real high school experience before, so I still have nothing to go off of.
Right now high school is a place where there are high expectations for you and you go to class and class staying 6-feet apart from all students and teachers, washing off the desk at the end of every block, and wearing a mask 24/7. It’s just a struggle.
I feel like the teachers try and level out the workload and some days I barely have any work and other days I am drowning in work. On Wednesday’s I barely get work. I used to do all my work, not during the scheduled time. As a result, I would only be working for roughly 3 hours.
Since I’m in high school now, I have been putting in so much more effort than I did in previous years. Last year, I had roughly all C’s, and this year I have all A’s and B’s. It’s challenging being remote and in-person but overall I’m trying so much harder and participating more.
It’s harder to maintain the work when it’s all online and you have to get all your work in on time. Most teachers are somewhat lenient with due dates but others are not. If you are even a day late, points are taken off your grade. This creates a lot of stress for other students as well.
I really want to get a real feel of what high school is normally like, but unfortunately, for me and all the other freshmen, we may not get a chance at a real high school experience till at least next year. Hopefully, we will end up finding the feel of a normal high school experience eventually.
