Don’t worry, I won’t be talking about the actual game. I’m sure all of New England is still healing from not being in the Super Bowl this year, so I’ll put everyone at ease and talk about the real highlight of the night; the halftime show.
Well, calling it a highlight might just be an overstatement. If you didn’t watch the game or didn’t see any ads for it, The Weeknd performed. Now, I usually really like his music. There hasn’t been a single song I’ve heard by him that I didn’t like. Naturally, I was excited for the Super Bowl for this main reason.
Though this is the case, I was slightly underwhelmed by the performance. He sang his hits, which is totally expected from someone performing at the Super Bowl. This wasn’t my issue. I think that he could have done a little bit more. I kept thinking about how much I enjoyed J-Lo and Shakira last year, because they made it look really cool visually while also giving us amazing vocals.
This year, there wasn’t much going on. Maybe that was his choice or it was because of COVID, but like I said, I was underwhelmed. Vocally he did well, but I think there could have been more going on. There was a minute or two where he went to a backstage area and had an interesting “dance number”, if you can even call it that, where they were all running around and crashing into each other. Like I said, interesting.
His song choices were good, stuff that most people would know if they had a little bit of exposure to Kiss 108 within the past few years. Nearing the end of the performance, The Weeknd’s backup dancers were on the field and there was a larger, and cooler, dance number. He finished with Blinding Lights, his biggest song as of right now.
Let me talk about his outfit for a second by the way, he wore black pants with a red sparkly blazer. The dancers wore the same, and they all had masks on. It was minimalistic but still fun, and I appreciated that.
At the end of the day, I’ll still really like The Weeknd. His performance last night was subpar, but he’s still a really good musician and I will continue listening to his songs.
