With three of OA’s winter sports teams in quarantine, as a community we have to ask ourselves why?
The answer: Parties.
Remember at the beginning of lockdown in March when everyone thought quarantine was only going to last two weeks then it turned into 6+ months? Yeah, how could you forget, you couldn’t. Surely then you will remember when people started slowly transitioning into seeing their friends and loved ones.
Now some people did this reasonably, others well… You saw the topic. Now when I say this I don’t mean for it to come off as an I am holier than thou watch me set the standard to live up to, because that’s not what I mean and nobody is perfect but for me personally. I’ve only had two COVID scares. The first time it was an issue was because out of the 7 people I see regularly, two of them who work at the same establishment came in close contact with someone from work that tested positive. Even though it was not likely that I could have gotten it, knowing I might have was obviously concerning. But I was not mad, per se.
However the second time, right now actually I am.
I follow COVID-19 guidelines decently well. I’m never at gatherings of more than 10 people, and I wear my mask in public – over my nose, yeah let’s take some notes – like a decent person. You get the message.
The most questionable thing I partake in is my sports team. And we were all doing completely fine until choice individuals in a certain grade decided to throw an early New Year’s Eve party because why not start the new year with a couple more COVID cases than we ended 2020 with right?
Anyway, one thing led to another, and here I am in quarantine. All because what? Some teenagers who are peaking in high school just needed to party? Right.
See because when it is a situation where someone got it from their coworker and they didn’t find out until after socializing with more people, you can’t really be that mad; it’s nobody’s fault. But when you go to a party during a pandemic and get the coronavirus then continue to spread it around to people, it just makes you look bad.
This is where I’m even more bothered, if you took psych at any point you’ve probably heard about how the frontal lobe is responsible for your decision making and judgment and it doesn’t finish developing till you’re 25 yadda yadda yadda. So knowing that I guess it makes some sense why these teens don’t know any better.
But the fact that half of them are doing it with their parents being fully aware? That doesn’t sit right with me. I understand – well definitely not in the way a parent would but to an extent – that it is painful seeing your kid upset and you want to make them happy with some sense of normalcy. But letting them throw a rager during a spike of a pandemic? Is it really worth infecting three entire sports teams? Really?
I just hope that more people will start to realize that if we want normal back we have to give it up better than we have been as of now and just hold out for a little longer. Because c’mon now, you don’t want to be that kid that spreads corona around the school because of one night of fun.
