This past week has been a chaotic one in politics. But I’m here to discuss the best thing that happened: Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff are going to the Senate!
After months of campaigning, the Democrats were victorious. Now, they will have control of the Senate due to the future President of the Senate, Kamala Harris being the tie-breaker. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Shumer and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will have more power in Congress, for at least the next two years. But I want to reminisce on how we got here.
Although I’m young, I’ve studied multiple previous political campaigns and I was extremely impressed by the Ossoff campaign this year. Between Ossoff’s funny tik toks and attack ads against Senator Perdue, the campaign definitely appealed to young voters. I even saw multiple advertisements aimed at Georgia voters who specifically turned 18 after the presidential election, but before the runoffs. It wasn’t only the Ossoff campaign that contributed to his win though. Organizations such as Meidas Touch, Don Winslow Films, and The Lincoln Project, along with comedians, such as Blaire Erskine, immensely contributed to both wins in Georgia. Additionally, I believe that Stacey Abrams played the most crucial role in Georgia’s flip blue, as she has spent her time registering thousands of Georgia voters and fighting voter suppression.
Overall, Warnock and Ossoff’s wins proved that grassroots efforts can make a difference and that the future is still bright.
