Next fall Jonny Gordon, Oliver Ames Class of 2021, is continuing his academic and athletic career at Umass Boston under a baseball contract.
During the interviewing process, the question that was most sought out for Jonny was what the scouting process looked like for him. He gave nice and concise answers along with his tips for other students trying to get scouted, as well as his own thoughts on his process.
“Get on top of scouting process early and play your hardest during every game and practice you never know who’s watching.” -Jonny Gordon, Class of 2021
“Overall it wasn’t too bad it got overwhelming at some points but once I got organized with it was very easy to control and maintain. It was lots of texts and phone calls between schools and performing my best in front of them during games.”
When asking Jonny about how he decided on Umass Boston part of the discussion evolved when reflecting on his decision in regards to his other options. He disclosed the names of the other schools that were of interest to him which included “Endicott, Salve Regina, Southern New Hampshire U, Framingham State, Bridgewater State, Rhode Island College, Johnson and Wales, Stonehill, Becker, Worcester State, [and] Salem State.” Gordon explained his reason to decide on UMB with:
“I chose Umass Boston because it’s a beautiful campus right on the water outside of Boston. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Easton so it’s close without being too close. The baseball is also very good ranked after the 2019 season they were the number 5 D3 baseball team in the country.” Gordon states that like many other students entering college he has the distance he wanted from his current environment however “I’m a short car ride away from them if I ever need anything.”
When asked if he had any regrets on his decision Jonny said that although he had no regrets with his ultimate decision with Umass Boston he did indeed admit that “I wish I started the recruiting process earlier.”
“I am very excited to begin a new chapter in my life academically and athletically. [And] I am not too worried about it’ -“it” being the effects of COVID on his college experience- ‘it’s a long way away and hopefully things will be different by then.”
As for Oliver Ames, we can all agree that we are very proud of Gordan and wish him the best for all his future endeavors.
