This week on Trending-Rumours by Fleetwood Mac! No, it’s not 1977, but the studio album has entered the Billboard 200 Charts, staying in the top 10. This all started because of Nathan Apodaca, who made a viral TikTok of him skateboarding down the street, drinking cranberry juice, and listening to “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. This is the first time the record has been in the top 10 since 1978.
I’ve been waiting for almost a year now to talk about Fleetwood Mac, so settle in. It’s gonna be a long one.
Though Fleetwood Mac went through many changes in the past, the 5 people who recorded Rumours were Mick Fleetwood, Lindsey Buckingham, John and Christine McVie, and Stevie Nicks. During this time, everyone in the band was having affairs with every other member in the band. Stevie Nicks was known to have been involved with Mick Fleetwood after her long term relationship with Lindsey Buckingham, and John and Christine McVie were also having their own issues. That’s what makes the album so good. They’re all speaking from the heart. Many of the members said that the only time they weren’t fighting was when they were making music. So many of the songs by both Buckingham and Nicks are attacks on each other, including “Dreams”, “Go Your Own Way”, and “Silver Springs”.
Let’s break the album down into two categories: hits and deep tracks. Four songs were released as singles, “Dreams”, “Go Your Own Way”, “Don’t Stop”, and “You Make Loving Fun”. These songs reached the US Top 10, as well as the UK charts. The other two popular songs from the album are “The Chain”, one of the most popular Fleetwood Mac songs, and “Silver Springs”. For an album with 12 songs, 6 of them being widely known all over the world isn’t bad at all.
Half of these are attacks on other band members, while the other half are methods of damage control, or happy songs without a backstory that an audience would enjoy. For example, Lindsey Buckingham wrote “The Chain” to prove that the band has a bond and it should not break because of some arguments. “You Make Loving Fun” was just a song Christine McVie wrote about being in love.
Now onto deep tracks. One song sticks out as being in the middle, though, and that is “Gold Dust Woman”. The song was written by Stevie Nicks (who I would like to mention is probably my favorite person in music ever), and it was simply a song about a gold dust woman. Nicks has been known to be a witch, so this song is one of those songs that really proves that fact. “I Don’t Want To Know” by Buckingham and Nicks is another one of the attacking songs, but they’re on the same track! That’s what makes it amazing! They’re singing to each other about each other! It’s so good!
“Second Hand News” and “Never Going Back Again” are other songs by Buckingham written about Nicks. They both center around feeling like he was unimportant to Nicks, and the songs get some serious responses from Nicks. “Silver Springs” was Nicks’ song about how badly she felt inside after her relationship with Buckingham ended the way it did.
So, Rumours is the best rock album ever made. I said it! I listen to a lot of rock, and I never get tired of listening to this, and I’m one to get bored of music easily. As for the argument of the best song, it’s “Silver Springs”. Period, end of discussion. I understand liking the other songs, obviously, but “Silver Springs” is just so beautifully crafted and deserves all the recognition in the world. Maybe I’m biased towards Stevie Nicks-okay, I definitely am-but my opinion still stands. If you’ve never listened to Rumours, do it immediately! It will change your life.
