As a new feature for the Daily Olivian, we will be giving short recaps on some popular social media posts throughout each week.
Though there are no promises that there will be popular social media posts every week, I think we all know the internet well enough to understand that there will inevitably be enough to go around.
- Ariana Grande’s album announcement
On Wednesday, famous singer Ariana Grande announced via social media that she will be releasing a new album next month. Twitter and Instagram went absolutely wild. The last time she released a record was last February, and many fans are excited for new music dubbed “AG6.”
- Trisha Paytas and Willy Wonka
If anyone has been on the Internet for awhile, you probably know the name Trisha Paytas. She has been a YouTuber for over 10 years, and most of her life has been shown on her channel and social media accounts. She is probably one of the most controversial figures on the Internet, as she is known for offending different ethnic groups and the LGBTQ+ community. Throughout the past day or so, she has been seen with Duke Depp, a 19 year old who dresses up as Willy Wonka on TikTok. Both have been all over everyone’s For You page, and they teamed up to make a bunch of TikToks together.
- New iPhone 12
On Tuesday, Apple announced the newest iPhone, and the presale starts today, October 16. However, most people on social media were taken aback by the fact that earbuds and a charging brick are not included with the phone, the first time Apple has shipped a phone without either accessories. The company believes this to be more environmentally friendly, but Twitter had a field day with this and made plenty of jokes.
- The Tony Awards nominations
Nominations for the Tony’s came out this week! So many amazing people were nominated for best lead actor in a musical; Aaron Tveit, and… that’s it. This was probably one of the funniest things I’ve seen on social media this week. Broadway actor Aaron Tveit was the only nominee for best actor at the Tony Awards, and the theatre community was not having it. Oh well, what can you do? Not many actors were able to qualify for the category because not many met the performance criteria this year. Congrats, Aaron!
