In recent weeks, the 2018 video game Among Us has been one of the biggest things amidst teens and young adults. This was originally popularized by Twitch streamers and Youtubers, namely Sodapoppin, PewDiePie, Pokimane, and CallMeCarson, who would play the game with their friends on a stream or video. The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic is also a primary reason for its success.
Since the game has skyrocketed, many people have been buying the computer version, or downloading the app from the app store. The game can host up to 10 players, and groups can either be private to a group of friends or public for anyone to join. Essentially, there are up to 3 players called “impostors”, whose sole purpose is to kill the remaining players, called “crewmates”, while the crewmates do tasks on a spaceship to keep it from deteriorating. If an impostor kills a crewmate and someone finds their body, they can report it to the rest of the group and they have 2 minutes to discuss who they think the impostor is. After the discussion a vote is held, and whoever gets the most votes is eliminated, and the process continues until all real impostors are kicked from the spaceship. The game also features multiple maps, in case players need a change of scenery.
Because the game is very common among teens right now, I decided to ask a few people how they felt about it.
“Great game on both the app and PC. It’s super fun to play with friends, and I play with my coworkers during our free time. It’s like an advanced version of Mafia.” – Skyla Harlfinger, Class of 2021
“It’s really addicting after a few rounds, it’s hard to pull yourself away from it.” – Hayden Tahavori, Class of 2021
“Initially, I played it to understand the memes I have been seeing everywhere. Now that I know how to play, the game has become very addictive.” – Chidera Akanegbu, Class of 2021
As for me, I really enjoy the game! I think it’s a good pastime for those who can’t do their usual activities due to the pandemic. I think that it’s really an enjoyable game for everyone, not just those who like video games. I’ve found that a lot of my friends (and we’re no gamers) have had a lot of fun playing the game, as it’s pretty addicting. I believe that Among Us is a fun game for all ages, and definitely deserves its newfound popularity.
