On Tuesday, April 20th, Governor Charlie Baker announced that schools would be closing through the end of the year, and all learning would continue remotely. This news came as an expected, but still sad, part of the new normal that is social distancing.
Most students that I talked to emphasized that they knew that this was coming. Even though the news was not shocking, it still was disappointing, due to the end of the high school career for seniors and the end of the spring sports season.
Aeden Marcus, a Junior, shared the mindset of many other students I talked to, as she knew the end of the school year was inevitable. ”I feel horrible for the seniors but I thought this was coming and from my perspective the sooner they communicated that the better. That way we can figure out the rest of the “school” year and not be in limbo.”
Many students I talked to, like Haley Cuthbert, expressed how they “feel terrible for the seniors because they lost all their high school memories.” Sarah Orsinger echoed these statements, saying that she would “really hope they postpone graduation and at least senior prom until the summer.”
Abbey Querzoli also touched upon what many students are feeling at the moment: confused, sad, maybe even angry. “Deep down I knew this was coming, but now that it’s happening, I’m kinda in shock. Like seeing it for real is scary.”
