On March 13, 2020, singer-songwriter Niall Horan released his second studio album, Heartbreak Weather. The ex-boyband member’s sophomore album has 14 songs, including four singles. Overall, the LP was received very well by fans and music critics alike.
If you know me, you know I’m a total One Direction fan. I was also a big fan of Horan’s first solo record, Flicker. However, I was somewhat reluctant to listen to Heartbreak Weather. The first single that was released was “Nice To Meet Ya,” which I did not like as much as I had expected. I think this made me believe that the rest of the songs would be similar, so I didn’t bother listening to the other singles until the rest of the album was available.
I think that was probably one of the worst decisions of my life. Heartbreak Weather is fantastic. Everything about it is fantastic, except for “Nice To Meet Ya.” Another single, “Put a Little Love On Me,” is such an amazing sad song playlist, and I’ve been listening to it on repeat even when I’m happy. “Everywhere” has a great beat, while also having great lyrics to go with it. Niall Horan is an amazing songwriter, lyrically and musically.
The title track “Heartbreak Weather” has lovey-dovey, borderline ballad-esque lyrics, but the music is so upbeat that it just makes you want to get up and dance. The music on the majority of the record is like that, and there aren’t too many slow songs. I think that records with one or two token slow, sad songs are the best, not only because it shows the diversity of the artist’s possible discography, but it also is a good way to express pain and raw emotion.
Overall, this album is great. After listening, I’ve added plenty of songs to my playlists and will definitely be going back to listen to the whole thing over again.
