The 2019-2020 winter season was another successful year for Oliver Ames sports. Some notable accomplishments include: Winter track has two athletes competing in Nationals. Basketball had winning seasons with both teams qualifying for the playoffs and for wrestling, four wrestlers made it to states. Girls’ swim had another record-breaking undefeated season and claimed first place at the Hockomock Championship. In order to accurately name a male and female OA winter athlete of the year, personal accomplishments, impact on team’s success, and pure skill were all assessed. The 2019-2020 Oliver Ames female winter athlete of the year is Morgan Foltz. The 2019-2020 Oliver Ames male winter athlete of the year is Kyle Sarney.
Earlier in the season, we named Morgan Foltz as an OA player of the week for her tremendous achievements as a member of the OA girl’s swim team. Foltz helped lead the team to another undefeated season dominating every single team in their path and eventually claiming first place at the Hockomock Championships. One of her biggest accomplishments was breaking a league record with a record-setting time of 24.91 in the 50 yard freestyle. At the Hockomock Championship, she won gold in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:20.94. Foltz earned this title due to her record-breaking achievements that led to an unforgettable season for girls swim.
Kyle Sarney is one of the most spectacular athletes to ever walk through the halls of Oliver Ames. During the fall season, Kyle Sarney was named the Oliver Ames fall athlete of the year for his ridiculously impressive accomplishments as part of the OA cross country team, and this season he continued to impress as a member of the winter track team. His skills as a distance runner proved useful as he consistently won his races to help the boys winter track team finish the season with a winning record. Sarney is the only male runner to qualify for the Nationals and he did so by running sub-9:30.00 in the 2 mile race. Sarny has broken many records and reached new heights originally inconceivable, and the fact that he is only a junior, gives him another year to train and develop into one of the best Oliver Ames runners ever.
Foltz and Sarney have led their respective teams to unimaginable accomplishments. Their personal achievements and records could have never been reached if they did not possess a hard-working mentality, always pushing them to up their game to the next level. Morgan Foltz and Kyle Sarney earned the title OA winter athletes of the year because of their pure skill and excellence they have demonstrated this past season.
