Yesterday’s Super Tuesday has left us with a trove of information that all points to one thing: Joe Biden is surging, his campaign has delivered a shockwave that seemed improbable at best four days ago. The testament to how vibrant momentum is in the political world is at full-show right now. Biden’s campaign was looking in a heap of trouble headed into South Carolina, having gotten a distant second in Nevada to Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders, along with disappointing 4th and 5th place finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire respectively. Headed into South Carolina, Biden’s campaign knew this would be a make or break state for him, and he more than delivered, picking up an outright majority of support, with the black population he has been talking about for weeks overwhelmingly supporting him, leading him into Super Tuesday with a crucial win behind him, and a heap of momentum. The momentum can be attributed to moderate candidates Pete Buttigieg and Amy Kloubachar endorsing Biden after dropping out of the race with two days left until the biggest delegate night in the race. Joe Biden not only capitalized on that momentum, he ran away with it, as the southern states of Oklahoma, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, North Carolina, and Virginia overwhelmingly supported his campaign, a large part of his support comes from the aforementioned black population of the south, a majority recognizing Joe Biden as the Vice President to the nations first black president. The boost of moderate support from states like Massachusetts, Texas, and Minnesota propelled Biden to a lead in the Super Tuesday delegate count, capturing over 4.5 million votes compared to Sanders 3.6 million. This field, once the most diverse in the Democratic Parties history, has shrunk down to 2 candidates: Joe Biden, and Bernie Sanders, who’s strong showing in California (the nation’s top delegate prize), Colorado, and Utah propelled him to a distant second place against his progressive competitor Elisabeth Warren, who didn’t pass third place in any of the states. Joe Biden’s incredible Super Tuesday results combined with his appeal to moderates and conservatives alike have propelled him up in the polls and given his once thought to be withered away campaign a breath of fresh air. Needless to say, this is going to get interesting with the prospect of a brokered convention.
