Last Wednesday, February 26, a new Netflix Original show called I Am Not Okay With This was available for streaming. It stars Sophia Lillis, and Wyatt Oleff, as well as Sofia Bryant, are the main characters of the teen-dramedy show.
So, I binged the show over the weekend. Before you judge that, it’s a seven-episode long series with episode lengths ranging from 19-23 minutes each. It did not take that long. I had initially heard of the show online, and I was excited to watch it because I was a fan of the children cast in 2017’s It.
The show did remind me of Stranger Things. Essentially, the main character Sydney Novak has mysterious powers that she wants to figure out. If you are familiar with the plot of Stranger Things, or even Carrie, Sydney’s powers are a sort of parallel to Eleven and Carrie’s telekinetic powers. She has two friends, Stan, Sydney’s neighbor, who knows about her powers and wants to help her, and her best friend Dina, who becomes distracted with her friendship by her new relationship with their school’s football star.
Overall, the show had awkward moments, in my opinion. Some of the camera angles were also definitely questionable. It looks like a 70s/80s atmosphere, while it takes place today, as teens use modern technology. I’m not going to spoil the odd moments, but when you watch them, you’ll know what I mean. Also, since this is not technically a spoiler, the ending is a cliffhanger. This fact implies a second season. I think that if this show were any longer within the first season, I would not be as inclined to recommend it. It does have an overdone storyline, but I honestly am curious to see how a second season, given the circumstances, would play out.
