For the week of February 16 through February 22, Jay Spillane, of the Oliver Ames boys basketball team, has been named the Oliver Ames Player of the Week.
Ever since Spillane was listed as a top 10 player to watch by Hockomocksports.com, it was inevitable for him to win the title of OA Player of the week. Spillane has been a major contributor to the success of the OA boys basketball team. Currently, he averages over 13 points per game.
Last Wednesday, the Tigers had a crucial game against Southeastern Regional which determined whether or not they made the playoffs. In this must-win scenario, Spillane rose to the occasion. In a dominating 81-27 win, Spillane dropped a career-high of 34 points, shooting 8 for 12 from beyond the 3-point line and only missing 5 shots all night. Alongside the point contribution, Spillane also had 5 assists and 4 steals.
“I wasn’t really nervous coming to that game even though it was a must win. Our whole team including myself knew that if we beat KP, we had a great chance of making the playoffs. I just played that game as if it were my last and eventually caught fire in the first half which put the game away from the start.”
“Our matchup with Westwood is a good one. Both teams run the court well and have a similar offense. They are a much different team than Hanover so we really have to adjust and play our game and we should come home with the win.”
The OA boys basketball team has their next playoff game versus Westwood on Thursday (2/27) at 6:30 at Westwood High School.
