Parasite, directed by Bong Joon-ho, is the first foreign language film to win the Oscar for Best Picture. It won in a landmark upset against high-profile movies like 1917 and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
This South Korean movie tells the story of two families, one upper class and one lower class. The main family in the movie is able to implant themselves into the lives of the wealthy Parks, pretending to be tutors, drivers, and housekeepers.
This movie never goes where you’d expect it to, and the ending came as a massive shock to me. I won’t say much more about the plot, as this is a movie that is best watched knowing very little. That being said, I love this movie and would definitely recommend it. Every shot is masterfully planned out and each actor plays their parts perfectly. Even the subtitles don’t hurt the quality of the movie – you forget you’re even reading them just 10 minutes in.
If you are interested in class satire, horror, or just want to see what the hype is about, make sure to watch Parasite.
