Over the long weekend, I decided to see Little Women. I was excited to see this movie mostly because of the cast, and I’ll admit I never actually read the book by Louisa May Alcott or the 1994 film starring Winona Ryder. There are many familiar faces throughout the movie, the main character Jo March being played by Saoirse Ronan, as well as Twitter’s white boy of the year Timothée Chalamet playing the leading man Laurie. The film also stars Meryl Streep, Emma Watson, and Florence Pugh. As I said, the cast was what initially drew me to the film, but the plot made it so much better.
Looking back, I can’t believe I waited this long to see it. The film was released on Christmas Day, 2019, and has made over $50 million at the box office since. It is based on the book of the same title and takes place in Concord, Massachusetts. It was filmed all over the state, in Boston, Harvard, Concord, and Lancaster. It is about writer Jo March’s life with three sisters, a mother, and a father at war. The girls soon become friends with their neighbor Laurie, and there is romantic tension between Jo and himself immediately. There are hardships on the March family because of their economic status, so Jo writes in order to provide them with the money they need after the events in the majority of the film and the Civil War. The film also gets into all of Jo’s sister’s lives, and you are bound to get emotionally attached. I won’t spoil the rest, but I mean it is available at movie theaters, so if anyone wants to know what happens, they can see it for themselves. Anyway, I cried hard watching this movie. Multiple times. It was beautifully done by the actors, and the messages of the film were perfectly coming across. The film also has received six Academy Award nominations. The results are TBD on February 9.
Director Greta Gerwig did a fantastic job with this movie. I guess I’m not the best judge of how close it is to the book, but seeing as it did so well, I can only imagine it was reasonably accurate. I don’t think I’ll ever stop recommending this movie, the entire thing is cinematic gold, and I have contemplated going back to the theater to see it again, and I only saw it two days ago. If you get the chance, Little Women is not a film you would want to miss.
