This past Sunday, January 5th, 2020, was the annual Golden Globes. If you’re anything like me, it’s a little bit difficult to remember the difference between the various awards shows. (If I’m the only one that’s embarrassing, but don’t tell me so I can sleep peacefully at night.) So, the Golden Globes celebrates outstanding achievement in film and television, not to be confused with the Oscars, which is solely for cinematic excellence.
With the Golden Globes usually comes one of my favorite parts about these types of events; the red carpet. Per usual, most of the male looks were boring. However, theatre star and actor Billy Porter seriously delivered. His look was amazing, a very camp look that the Golden Globes definitely did not deserve. The top of the outfit was a normal white suit, but it eventually became a white feather bottom, complete with a train and high heel boots. Bohemian Rhapsody star Lucy Boynton also had a stunning metallic dress, with shoes to match, and dramatic eye makeup. One of my absolute favorites of the night was Zoey Deutch, who rocked an amazing yellow Fendi outfit.
Now, I watch a lot of movies and TV. However, I was totally disappointed with a lot of the winners from the weekend’s ceremony. I think I should preface this by saying I’m fully aware of all of the work that people put into making these shows and films, these are all 100% my opinion. Now, I think that one of the best movies of 2019 was Rocketman. I mean, I’m as much of an Elton John fan as the next girl, and I think it deserved the two out of three wins it received. One of the shows that I was disappointed to not see a win from was The Politician. The show stars the aforementioned Zoey Deutch and Lucy Boynton, as well as Ben Platt, Gwenyth Paltrow, and American Horror Story’s Jessica Lange. The Netflix original is about high school government and sly ongoings, and I found it very entertaining. It was nominated for Best Television Series, and Platt was nominated for Best Actor for his role. If you’re looking for a new show to watch on Netflix, watch this one. It’s funny as well as intense and you’ll quickly get wrapped up in the plot. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood was probably one of the years most popular films, and it showed at the Golden Globes, winning Best Motion Picture; Musical or Comedy, as well as two other awards. I don’t think I can end this without talking about Cats, one of 2019’s ending memes. The film left with no Golden Globes, and host Ricky Gervais made jokes about the musical-turned-movie.
So, the Golden Globes happened. There were definitely highlights of the night, but I don’t feel very satisfied with the results. That being said, the red carpet was probably the best part of the whole evening.
