With the Oliver Ames fall sports season at its conclusion, we decided to take a look back at this years star athletes from the season. Fall sports had a tremendous success; records were broken, teams were playoff bound, and division championships were won. In order to crown an Oliver Ames male and female fall athlete of the year, personal statistics, impact on team’s success, and pure skill were all assessed. The OA female fall athlete of the year is Allie Kemp of volleyball. The OA male athlete of the year is Kyle Sarney of cross country.
Allie Kemp has been selected as this year’s Oliver Ames female fall athlete of the year due to her spectacular setting abilities and leadership qualities, that helped her team advance to the Division 2 State Finals. Not even a month into the season, Allie Kemp was named the HockomockSports.com Player of the Week for becoming the third player in Oliver Ames volleyball history to reach the 1,000+ assist club. Finishing with an overall 18-5 record, the volleyball team won the Hockomock League Championship. After winning the first round of the post-season tournament, they were forced to take on the undefeated Dartmouth. And in one of the most electric games ever, the lady tigers knocked out Dartmouth in 5 sets, propelling them into the Division 2 State Finals. Co-captain, Jordan Bosse, will miss playing with her. “Allie is a great player who leads by example and her overwhelming talent drove us to surpass OA volleyball history,” she said.
Kyle Sarney has been selected as this year’s Oliver Ames male fall athlete of the year because of his superb talent on the cross country course that led to the Boy’s Cross Country Team’s impressive success. The OA Boy’s Cross Country team had tremendous success this year with Kyle Sarney as their number one runner. They won the Hockomock League Championship, and in the Brown Northeast XC invitational, they placed second. At the Brown XC Meet, Kyle Sarney ran 15:45 5k, which was good enough to move him into the second place in the all-time ranks for Oliver Ames. Captain Rory McLaughlin had this to say about Kyle Sarney, “he went out there race after race for us, consistently performing extremely well. He would go out there and do exactly what we needed him to do. His consistency is astounding, and is a huge reason why we are able to bring home our first Hock Championship in 17 years.”
Kemp and Sarney have displayed their physical and mental strength, along with their strong leadership qualities. Their pure skill was demonstrated by their dominance as both of them led their team to league titles and beyond. Allie Kemp and Kyle Sarney have been named this year’s Oliver Ames Fall Athletes of the Year due to excellence in their respective sport.
