Teachers. Your students love and appreciate you, we really do. Even if we don’t say it. We truly do.
You guys have a lot of responsibilities on any given day. You most likely have kids at home, a significant other to deal with, on top of grading papers, and giving out assignments. If the scripts were flipped I just wouldn’t be able to as great of a job as you guys. Really.
ONE thing most students don’t appreciate though is this double standard that has been around for ages.
We as your students come to school, for the most part, every day. Sometimes you aren’t here because you had a glitch in your schedule and had to stay home with your sick children or maybe your even sick as well.
But the minute one of your students is absent, all hell breaks loose. We receive so much passive-aggressiveness from our teachers for being absent, most of the time without them even knowing why we are absent. As in it’s always our fault for not being on top of everything even when things for us aren’t the greatest.
A lot of times we really don’t want to be absent, to be very honest. I get mortified of being absent because of how much make up work and how behind I’ll be the next day and I know many other students who share that feeling.
I’m not saying that every absent child should be given special treatment to allow them to make up their work. I’m just asking that the passive aggressiveness is stopped.
All I ask is that we get the same respect we give you when you are absent! Things happen! Sometimes we are just sick, or just need a mental health break from dealing with the class load.
