The week before Thanksgiving, otherwise known as Spirit Week, has undergone changes this year as Student Council is working to create an inclusive and fun school environment.
Spirit Week has traditionally been celebrated by having different themed dress up days, but this year, the activities are ambitious and advisory based.
On Monday, advisories will be paired up to compete in “advisory trivia,” where advisories can win points and a breakfast from Student Council.
On Wednesday, every student will be given a sticker with a number on it, and will have the rest of the day to find the student with the same number as theirs.
On Friday, students will be entered in a lottery where they have the chance to win a gift card.
Mrs. Kenney, a history teacher and Student Council Adviser, explains that the reason why the changes were implemented. The changes are intended to foster a sense of inclusion among students and to show that recent hateful incidents do not define student’s high school career.
“Those handful of moments with individual kids is not the accurate synopsis of what Oliver Ames looks like… we think that Oliver Ames high school thrives on kid being kind to one another that don’t necessarily run in the same circles.”
