Since I began writing for the Daily Olivian, I’ve wanted to write an article on politics, but I’ve been hesitant until now. If you know me at all, you’ll know that I’m very extreme in my political views, which is why I was so afraid of writing a biased article. But I’ve become a big advocate against holding back your views. Instead of restraining from controversial topics, such as politics and religion, I believe that healthy debate is necessary, especially with politics, and it creates more political awareness. Learning different viewpoints will only further develop your own, and keep you well informed. In our political climate today, I believe that the idea that knowledge is power has been lost, but I strive to restore it.
Politics is all around us. You can never escape what this country is shaped by. So if you’re uninformed and feel that you will never be well informed, I recommend starting now. So many Americans have poorly developed and uninformed opinions, and understanding the basics is key. Since many students have the ability to vote in the upcoming election, except of course myself, my goal is to inform you about the possible Democratic candidates. I’m very proud of myself already… I’m two paragraphs in and I haven’t even brought up that name yet!
I’m not interested in talking about Donald Trump at the moment. We all know what he represents I hope – building a wall, tweeting at 1 a.m. – and then at 6 a.m., befriending communists, using airplanes in the 1700s, and so on. I could go on… I mean it.
In my upcoming articles, I plan to focus on topics regarding the Democratic nominee candidates. Throughout this school year, a very important political year, I will teach basic concepts, discuss current events, share my opinions, and inform you about the most important of Donald Trump’s potential opponents. My new series will emphasize not just ‘What Matters’, but ‘What Matters in Politics’, and I promise it’ll be worth the read. Through the understanding of opposing views, I plan to unite people, rather than continue to tear this country apart. No matter which side you lean toward, this election will be a turning point in American history.
