Last week, pop singer Selena Gomez released a single after four years, titled Lose You To Love Me. As many people may know, Selena Gomez was the star of one of the most popular children’s shows of our generation, Wizards of Waverly Place, as well as Another Cinderella Story. While being a role model, she had a band called Selena Gomez and the Scene. She drifted from the group and released her own music. She was also in a very serious relationship with 2012 heartthrob Justin Bieber. They split up and got back together a few times, eventually ending their relationship in 2018.
One of the biggest plot twists in the lives of those born in the late 90s-early 2000s is that Justin Bieber got married to Hailey Baldwin (now Bieber) in early 2019. Many ‘Jelena’ fans were not too excited about this news. However, with the release of Gomez’s new song, people have started to spread rumors that the song hints at her past relationship.
The connections that fans have made have been, as some say, a reach. However, some of the lines, like ‘we always go at it blindly,’ could reference their on again off again pattern in the early 2010s.
Soon after the song and music video came out, Hailey Bieber posted a screenshot of the song “I’ll Kill You” by Jhené Aiko on her Instagram story. At this point, the internet lost control. So many people made the quick assumption that Bieber was referencing Gomez, and not too many were happy about it.
Bieber eventually came out and responded via Instagram, saying, “please stop with this nonsense… there is no ‘response.’” Gomez herself even told her fans to “please be kind to everyone. It doesn’t matter what the situation is.” Overall, it seems like fans of Selena Gomez and the Biebers alike tried to create drama out of nothing, which only caused stress and unwanted responses. The most important thing to learn from this is to let people live and be happy with their own lives.
