On October 28th, Easton will hold a special town meeting regarding the plans to merge all the elementary schools into one large school located on the fields in the back of Parkview.
The decision to try and combine the elementary schools is due to the massive amount of damage found in them like plumbing issues, replacing the boiler, new security system, and many more problems. To fix this would cost millions more than building a new school would, and building a new school would allow the layout of the school to be improved.
The school has received millions of dollars from the MSBA, or the Massachusetts School Building Authority, to help build the new school. If the Early Elementary School Project is voted down, their funding for the new schools would be lost.
Taxes on households would go up, on average, by 433 per year, which is less than it would if the schools were repaired.
Karen Rodgers, a member of the SEE, or Support Easton Education, give her thoughts on why the new school will be beneficial to students
“The existing PreK-2 elementary schools have aged a decade since you were there, and they have not aged well… Kids of Easton deserve a 21st Century elementary school with state of the art technology, collaborative learning spaces, and designated rooms for ELL, SPED, art, music, and gym. This is an opportunity for first-time voters to show support for the educational system that made them the citizens they are today.”
No matter your opinion on the issue, if you are 18, you need to go and vote to determine our Town’s future.
