This month, Common Planning was a little different, as the movieĀ Angst, about anxiety, was shown. This was the first time in recent memory that OA has played a movie during the monthly common planning rather than bringing a speaker into the school.
While there were issues with the movie, I think that the push to help students with their mental health is admirable, and needs to be a prominent focus by the school. It was refreshing not seeing another presentation about drugs or social media. While both are still crucial topics that need to be addressed, it becomes hard to listen to similar presentations over and over again and still be able to be attentive.
Anxiety is a widespread problem in school, and it is very important that students are aware that they are not alone when facing these challenges. The very nature of the school is stressful and anxiety-inducing, and it is nice to see that the administration is acknowledging the effects that it can have on students’ mental health. More can, and should, be done to help students with anxiety, but this is a significant first step forward.
Overall, addressing the issue of mental health in students made this Common Planning an essential one to anyone who struggles with anxiety, or anyone who wants to help those who do.
