Oliver Ames Golf opened the 2019 season with a 5-stroke loss to King Phillip, but followed the loss with a strong victory against Attleboro.
Senior captain’s Bradley Powers and Tate Hadges lead the charge this season, using their competitive experience to guide the team. “I feel like nobody played their best in our first game,” said Brad, reflecting on the loss. “We need to work on our mental game as a whole,” added Tate. Oliver Ames soon found their stride with a 13-stroke victory in the following contest against Attleboro.
The captains displayed great optimism towards this season. Tate described the team as “solid,” adding that “a lot of players have stepped up this year who didn’t play last year.” She expressed a promising outlook on the team: “We have a strong, supporting team, and we don’t rely on just one person. We have the ability to score low with multiple players, which is an asset.” Brad referred to this year’s squad as an “old team.” In terms of grade level and a “young team in terms of experience,” but he believes the underclassmen will add needed depth to the roster.
Head Coach Ryan Riley expressed his high praise and expectation for his team. “I feel we are going to be very competitive,” said Coach Riley. He recognized the “stability” that the captains have provided to the team, and also mentioned some key players on the roster. “Seniors Justin Shapiro and Sam Becker along with Sophomore Jo Jo Gaultier have improved since last year and help round out the team’s core group.”
Oliver Ames has won three consecutive MIAA Division 2 South Sectional championships, but fell short of winning the state title in all three years. This year’s team hopes to add to the legacy of the Oliver Ames Golf program. “The expectation is to make state sectionals and vie for a league title,” explained Coach Riley.
Oliver Ames Golf faces Sharon, September 12th, and will push for the number 1 spot in the coming days. As for his preparation, he has to make sure all his practice equipment are good to go and free of problems like a golf simulator blackout screen.
