Around 5:30 in the morning on any given day of the week, you can find Zane Reservitz showing his dedication to the two sports he takes part in. On the treadmill in Easton, Massachusetts at the Oliver Ames High School gym he is working hard towards a better performance in every race that he competes in. Zane keeps up with this strict gym schedule in order to maintain his record breaking mile time of 4 minutes and 34 seconds.
When Zane runs he “feels at home” as he describes it, because he has taken part in cross country for 3 years, winter track for 2 years, spring track for 2 years, and ski team for 2 years. Having a commitment to something is not new for Zane considering that he has done all of these sports throughout his high school career. Not only does Zane participate in these sports, but he also is a standout competitor in them all. The key to success in these sports, according to Zane, is to “listen and observe the upperclassmen on the team in order to learn from them and apply their techniques in your own training and competing.”
Although Zane is dedicated to the sports that he plays that doesn’t mean that he leaves school out of the picture in his life. His favorite subject is math because “it has shown me that I am capable of performing well in class.” After high school he plans on going to the University of Vermont to study pre-med with hopes of becoming a doctor one day. Zane also has a backup plan which is to study marketing and work with Nike in order to design running shoes for the people that share the same passion as him. This plan comes as no surprise to anyone who knows Zane because of his dedicated, passionate, and disciplined personality. One part of school that Zane thinks should be different is the fact that high school doesn’t teach you many skills that you need as an adult to survive such as paying taxes and bills.
Throughout college Zane plans on continuing his running career while also putting a heavy focus on his education in order to have a successful future. “Being able to work and make money while enjoying my job and life,” Zane said is his big goal in life. Although much of his time will be taken up working at first Zane will be able to enjoy the many fruits of life after a few years of having a job as a doctor considering how much money he will have already made. He hopes that his family will be able to go on frequent vacations and enjoy a comfortable lifestyle because of his hard work.
Zane has a job at Marathon Sports and he plans on staying with that job until he needs to get a real job in order to pay for expensive, or “life things” in his words. Going to work is not dreaded by Zane unlike lots of people because he knows that he will be making money while there and he enjoys the company of his co-workers. He is determined to build strong relationships with the people that he works with in order to construct a productive working environment. “It’s a perfect job for me because the store sells running products such as shoes, and I love running,” added Zane.
The most defined personality trait that has guided Zane through life is his passion. He puts his passion into everything whether it’s school, work, friends, family, or anything that is important to him. When Zane applied for a job he went to a store where he knew he could apply his passion at work while still having a simple job that doesn’t have prerequisites. When Zane applied for college he didn’t think about what school he could party the hardest at, but he thought about what school is going to give him the education he needs to succeed in his field as an adult and what school is going to give him opportunities to explore his passion for running in a track and field program.
Obstacles are faced by everyone at some point in their life and they come in many forms. One obstacle in Zane’s life is “interacting with enemies” he acknowledged. Obstacles can sometimes be seen as weaknesses, but through perseverance Zane is determined to turn his weaknesses into strengths.
