The talented, hard working art students at Oliver Ames High School have created a club that both showcases their artwork and benefits the students and staff. The Oliver Ames Art Club is dedicated to producing artwork around the school that supports a more colorful and exciting learning environment for students and staff.
The Art Club mainly works on spreading creativity in the school through sports murals down by the gym. Art teacher Ms. Shea and her students work their hardest on designing and painting a mural for each and every sport in the school.
“Art Club helps bridge the gap between the artists and athletes in the school communities, when creating these murals,” Vice President Cam Bourne explained. “We work our hardest in choosing the correct photos to display each sport to the best of our abilities.”
When the art students aren’t working on the murals, they are constructing customized name plaques. Teachers can order these plaques for their children, or for friends and family. The students receive ideas from different teachers, then use their creativity to design plaques that are unique. The money raised by these plaques is used to purchase more paints for the murals around the school.
The plaques can be very enjoyable for the students. Co Vice President Katie Mills explained that “art club is a fun and fresh time (for her) where (she) gets to hangout with friends and help out the school community at the same time!” She adds that one of her favorite activities in art club is “creating the name plaques because, (she is) able to use (her) own creativity to make them and cool as possible.”
Along with the sports murals, the Art Club also creates quotes and other school related murals around the rest of the school. The quotes are chosen by the faculty based on what they think should be inspiring people throughout the day.
“Our goal is to beautify the school one mural at a time,” explained Ms. Shea, the advisor for Art Club. “Without all the murals the students have done, the school would just be a plain blank canvas.”
Anyone in art 2, 3, and 4 classes are always welcome. The club meets tuesdays and thursdays every week. Art Club is a very welcoming and open environment for people to speak their minds and share their creativity. The Art Club always needs more people to help out especially around the art show season where they work intensively to create an amazing art exhibit to showcase to family and friends.
“Essentially Art Club is an amazing atmosphere where students can come together to make the school as colorful and exciting as possible.” president Hannah Cahill says. “I’ve met so many amazing people through the art department and I highly recommend it to anyone who has a love for creating.”
Keep an eye out for more sports murals around the school, as the students continue to work on them. The Art Club will continue to work their hardest as years go on to make the school and fun and vibrant place to learn.
