The student-athlete for this past week is Zane Reservitz, a Senior and leader of the boys ski team. Although Zane was not a captain of the ski team this year, he sure competed like one. He ended the season with a total of 352 points, easily the best on the team (second best had 88 points). This incredible season has made him the 18th best in the Mass Bay League, which means it isn’t over just yet! He will be competing in the State Championship on Wednesday at Wachusett ski mountain, hoping to earn the number one spot there.
Zane told me he was satisfied with where he is at this season, as he should be. There are a total of 250 athletes in the Mass Bay Ski League, so 18th place puts him in the top 10%. In addition to that, this was the first year that he has raced in the last 3 years. This is a DIFFICULT thing to accomplish, which Zane acknowledged as he said that his favorite moment was simply “this season, coming back to ski racing after a two year break and still having the skills to compete.”
He is clearly excited at the opportunity that lies ahead of him at the state championship as he told me “my goals going into state champs is to make Oliver Ames a well known ski team that is a constant threat to get athletes to the championship every year.” Hopefully he can complete this goal and represent not only himself well, but OA too.
Not only is Zane amazing at skiing, but he is one of the best runners that OA has seen in recent years. This year he will be running spring track as well as cross country (which has already ended) to prepare for his upcoming season at The University of Vermont, where he will participate in XC, winter track, and spring track.
However, he told me that “I might also tryout for the UVM ski racing team to replace winter track.” Either way, he is sure to do well in both his remaining time at OA and in college. We wish the best for him at State Champs for ski, as well as spring track!
