Students and teachers who check their school email with any regularity have almost certainly heard of her. Her name has become somewhat famous among students, some of whom have reportedly (and unsuccessfully) tried to block her emails, while others bemoan the fact that she is the only person who consistently emails them.
She is Trish Macki – the name invokes a kind of awe… and a repeated reminder of the still unopened Daily News.
For those that don’t check their email, Ms. Macki sends out OA’s Daily News to students and staff five days a week, keeping everyone informed and up-to-date on school club and sport events. Soon, however, the list of ‘Trish Macki – Daily News 1/24, Trish Macki – Daily News 1/25, Trish Macki – Daily News 1/28’ can pile up in one’s inbox and beg a persistent question: who is Trish Macki?
Ms. Macki’s official title at Oliver Ames High School is clerical aide and she works in the main office helping the school run smoothly. When not sending out the Daily News, she said that her “main job is attendance – taking care of absences, tardies, dismissals.” She also makes sure the office and the copy machines are well-supplied and helps people who come in the main office to drop things off or to sign in. “It’s a lot more than just [the Daily News],” Ms. Macki laughed.
Nonetheless, compiling and sending out the Daily News has been a part of Ms. Macki’s job for years. She gets emails from people who have news that they want to share about club information or school events, and she puts it into the document that gets sent out.
Sometimes, Ms. Macki gets email responses from students. Once she got an email that simply said, “Dude, what’s with all the emails?” Ms. Macki laughed, saying that when she gets emails like that she tells people that she’s just doing her job.
Working at OA has not been her only job, and Ms. Macki said that she has had three careers in total. “I was a travel agent for most of my career. I work here, and I’m also a certified pharmacy technician; I work at CVS too,” she said.
When not at work, Ms. Macki has a diverse set of activities that fill her time. She likes to travel and to spend time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoys kayaking and skiing, but she said that her favorite sport is sitting at the beach. “The beach, of course, is my number one because I do live at the beach,” said Ms. Macki. “My husband and I are into antique cars, so [we go to] car shows,” she added.
Ms. Macki said that she wants students to know that she loves her job. “I’ve had three students graduate from OA myself, so I have a lot of respect for all the teachers here. It’s a really well run school,” she concluded.
Ms. Macki’s favorite food is ice cream.
