While I for one have never been a fan of anything remotely scary, “The Haunting of Hill House” pulled me in, and made me never want to stop watching. If you love mysteries, cliffhangers, and jumping out of your seat, this show is definitely for you. Though it only has ten episodes in its first season, every hour brings new horrors and thrills you were never expecting before.
“The Haunting of Hill House” is based off of the novel by Shirley Jackson. It is the story of a family, whose five children grew up in “Hill House,” a haunted house that ended up being famous for all of the nonsense that occurred inside. All of their lives, their pasts have been following them around; the horrible memories they can not get out of their heads, surreal visions, and paranormal activity they experienced as children. Due to a misfortune that occurs towards the beginning of the show, the family is forced back together, resulting in their childhood fears sneaking up on them in adulthood.
I would definitely recommend this show as I would have rated it five stars. Throughout the entire time watching, so many unanswered questions were going through my mind. And by the last episode of the show, most were answered, while others were up for interpretation or that I chose to google. Every event and scene has so much meaning behind it, things that I never would have thought of. After being hooked on this show for a solid week and a half, once it was over, I decided to google some theories on what other fans thought, or I was even able to find answers to some of my questions by the cast and director. While I would consider this show to be a bit scary, it was also a bit graphic, so if you plan to watch, be prepared! I would recommend having a pillow or blanket handy to shield your eyes if you get grossed out easily. Despite some repulsive scenes, the show was great, they all did such a great job, the story line is amazing, the characters are chosen so well, and the show makes you feel so many emotions while you are watching, as if you were actually there with the family.
The “Haunting of Hill House” can be found on Netflix, as it is one of their new original shows.
