In the “An Hour With” series of publications, I will do a follow around with a faculty member for an hour and record the times and actions in order to show the everyday life of those who work at Oliver Ames.
10:12 AM- The middle hallways of the second floor is roughly eighty degrees and the sound of air conditioning units and fans in overdrive is pouring out of the hardware room. No one is in the room as I enter, but I wait patiently for any sign of human life. You rarely see Mr. Souza or his assistant Ethan sitting or wallowing in their own work. Instead, they are always on the move from classroom to classroom, room to room.
10:32 AM- Ethan walks into the room and starts to tinker with a computer part. I start to talk to him about his job and what it entails. “You grab a ticket, say what wrong, and we fix it”. Clean and simple.
10:40 AM- Ethan goes into the network room (the room which contains all of the school districts computer ware) and starts to set up portable air conditioners and fans. the air conditioning had failed over the weekend and the room had started to overheat- adding to the complexity of the IT department’s daily lives.
10:48 AM- Mr. Souza walks in and quickly shuffles some papers looking for something. We briefly greet each other and then he leaves the room.
11:00 AM- Ethan tinkers with more computer components in the computer room. We discuss how the heat is effecting the computers. He opened some boxes and worked on one of the components.
11:05 AM- Mr. Souza darts back out and in the room. He quickly grabs something and says he is going to another meeting.
11:12 AM- I thank Ethan for showing me the computer room and answering some questions. He continues to go back and fourth in between the rooms while I leave.
