You win some, you lose some. The girls soccer team lost to BR 2-0 recentkly, ending their season. Although the season came to an end, the love for OA soccer and the bond between teammates still remains. Senior Anna Tempestoso had a positive outlook, telling me “they were the 4th seed and we were 13th, so from the start we had an opportunity to be sort of the underdogs as we weren’t really supposed to win given the seed we were.” She continued by saying “for me all that matters is how well we work together and for each other to have a good game, and we definitely did that.”
Not only does this loss end the season, it ends an experience. There were 8 seniors on the team, and they all went through the emotional struggle on Saturday, realizing that it was the last time they would ever play together.
Sam Gilgan commented on how confusing this can be, saying “it hasn’t quite sunk in yet. The seniors have been playing together since we were 8 or 9 years old and it’s sad that this part of our lives is over, but it’s exciting knowing that there’s a whole new chapter starting for all of us.” Anna also talked about how strange the feeling was, saying “when the whistle blew and we realized it was out last game together it was definitely overwhelming. There is nothing more bittersweet than being a senior on the team, after all these years growing up and playing with these girls.”
For these 8 girls the weekend was a time of reflection on the past 4 years and what they have accomplished both as individuals, and as a team. There must have been so many memories coming back to them, but Sam’s favorite was “a pasta dinner sophomore year when the whole team just sat and talked in the pool for hours. That was when I really understood the tight bond we had.”
Both on and off the field the girls stood together, but now it is time for a new era in OA girls soccer. The seniors have a positive outlook on the upcoming team, as Anna said “our team has so much potential for the next few years to come, and I look forward to see how the girls grow.”
