Editor’s Note: The Daily Olivian is Publishing a senior profile of students starting November second. Each day will feature a new senior and their summated life.
Destiny Barros is not an average teenager girl, and the main thing that separates her from everyone else has been her impressively motivated mindset throughout her four years at Oliver Ames High School. Destiny, occasionally referred to as “Det” by close friends, was driven since she was young to be successful and independent, and that motivation made her strive for success.
Destiny started her first job at Farmer’s Daughter when she was just sixteen because she claims “that’s when I was allowed to work,” initiating the motivated mindset that has continued with her until the end of high school. Shortly after she got her first job at the Farmer’s Daughter, she got a second job at Subway.
Destiny was handling two jobs at once, and she described it as “draining… physically and mentally draining,” but she still pushed through and was successful in both her work life and school life. She remained motivated to do well even when it became hard, she never gave up on herself and her dreams. This is one of Destiny’s most admirable qualities, and she is an inspiration to many.
“During the school week I would work after school at Subway from 3 to 9, then on thursdays I went to the Farmer’s Daughter 5 to 9… and then on the weekends I got to the Farmer’s Daughter at 6:45 in the morning and stayed there until 5.” Destiny’s drive to be successful and independent kept pushing on.
Destiny was determined to have her own money. When asked what motivates her to be so successful, she answered with “the money, I’m obsessed with money.” Her objective in making so much money is the independence and all the freedom that comes with it. Destiny claims, “I like the fact that having money makes you independent, it’s the most rewarding feeling.” She works for what she gets, making her self-driven and independant.
With the mindset that money gives you independence and happiness, Destiny gave up her two sports, volleyball and basketball, to be able to work more often and make more money. She explains that “I played volleyball and basketball for two years and the coach did not know what he was doing, I did not think it was beneficial. It made more sense for me to stop playing and I just wanted to work so that I could make the most money possible.”
Destiny explains that she most likes the job she is working currently, a hostess at Corfinio. “Corfinio, which is my current job, is the best because I started off with a really fun manager and the only way I do well in the place is if I get along with the authority figures, which I did, and I get paid a lot more… it’s just a really good environment.”
From knowing Destiny personally since elementary school, I know she has always wanted to be successful. She puts complete effort and dedication into whatever she is doing no matter what.
Being successful is also the motivating factor for Destiny when it comes to school. She explains that “I am motivated enough but I wouldn’t say I go the extra mile. Money motivates me to do well… and family and friends.” She persistently strives to be successful and has been this way all throughout her years at Oliver Ames.
This incentive to be successful in school and life continues in Destiny’s plans for the future. She wants to go to college, she said “I want to go to the University of Massachusetts in Boston or Roger Williams. Literally only because they’re good schools with good atmospheres, they are on the water and they are relaxing.”
Destiny declared that her ultimate goal in life is “happy and healthy with a loving family,” and with the mindset she has kept throughout her whole life, she will do everything in her power to make that dream come true.
