The Leo Club at Oliver Ames is one of more than 6,500 LEO Clubs worldwide in over 140 countries. The Leo Club at Oliver Ames began in 1998 and is still active today. The club’s biggest service event is their glasses collection. Used glasses are sent to poor countries where they give a whole new life to others by allowing them to see clearly.
Co-president Abess Sabbagh encourages everyone to donate their used eyeglasses because “every pair of glasses makes a huge difference…one small contribution has a huge impact all around the world.”
Mrs. Sankaran’s father was a member of the Lions Club in India and now she is the Leo Club’s current advisor at Oliver Ames. Mrs. Sankaran believes that “the Leo Club will pass on leadership qualities from the Lions to students and create more awareness for eye research”.
The Leo Club provides students with many ways to serve their community. It is sponsored by the Lions Club, which is the largest service club organization in the world.
Matt Soeldner, a member of the Lions Club for 25 years and secretary for 11 years, believes that the Leo club gives students “the opportunity to meet other people, get out and learn from others.”
Members of the Leo Club will volunteer to help in Easton Lions Club events and services. Everyone is welcome to join and is encouraged to help out their community however they can.
If you are interested in joining the Leo Club or want to know more about it, contact Mrs. Sankaran at msankaran@easton.k12.ma.us or the Leo Club’s co-presidents, Abess Sabbagh and Yalinet Mantilla.
