The school committee at Oliver Ames High School this past week began the process of discussing the charging students and teachers for parking while possibly assigning a spot for them to use through the year. The objective would be to simplify the chaotic parking situation which currently remains in the Oliver Ames parking lots after and before school. By assigning spots to those who pay a fee, parking could supposedly become more orderly and efficient.
Dr. Cabral, the superintendent at the Easton Public School system, and the rest of the school committee, is trying to figure out the best possible way to logistically create a parking system.
“The school committee is, in fact, discussing fees. This includes athletics, clubs, activities, parking, and transportation. They have not yet made any decisions…We simply reviewed what other school districts are doing right now.”
Students and Teachers are not aware yet of what could be expected of them in the 2018 and 2019 school session, but it clear that many different opinions are emerging from the debate on whether to charge students and teachers to park at Oliver Ames High School.
“I have to worry about paying for applications and college itself, and I don’t want to worry about paying for a fee to park at my high school”, said Izzy Nataupsky, a Junior at Oliver Ames. “It would be my senior year. I wouldn’t want a Junior or Softmore to get a better spot than me. I understand why they would do it, but I feel like it would cause more issues than problems it would fix.”
Megan Foxx, another Junior at Oliver Ames, took a similar stance yet for a different reason.
“I believe that many will pay for a parking spot, but never actually abide by the rule of parking in their own spot. This idea is too underdeveloped to formulate a good plan of action as to how it would work.”
The process of assigning spots for the students and teachers is still in the early stages. As time goes on and the school year winds down, the school committee will cooperate with Dr. Cabral in order to form the best plan of action.
