New Mass Maritime commit Jack Mills, also known as big tuna to friends, is about to turn a new page continuing his athletic career post High School and is also hoping to go out with a bang ending his senior year.
Jack is hoping he can claim a starting spot right when he arrives for camp and make a difference for the Buccaneers Football team, but before he leaves he wants to try and do something different for his school.
“I get to use football as a time to forget about school and all of the drama going on in my life.”
This was pivotal for Jack when choosing what college he was going to commit to, but football was not his only problem when choosing where to attend.
“I chose to go to Mass Maritime because of the degree… I can major in emergency management and minor in criminal justice and that can lead me down many different paths.”
Jack could never play pop warner football because he was always over the weight limit. Once Jack played for OA he was a three year varsity starter for the Oliver Ames Tigers and is very happy that football came into his life.
“I get to play football after high school which i’m really excited about.”
He doesn’t feel like he put enough into his school so before Jack leaves for Mass Maritime he wants to do one more big thing during his senior year.
“Yes, I’m running for governor and hopefully I can put some positive impact into my school before I leave it.”
The campaigns are getting pretty heated between the two candidates and Jack is hoping that he can pull away with the votes, and his rumored running mate has a completely different platform.
“I’m on the very opposite political spectrum side of the other candidate.”
The topic of politics with Jack came up after talking about running for Governor and getting into politics with Jack was a very strong subject because of how much he loves his country.
“I’m a big patriot for my country and I’ll do anything for it.”
Jack explained his stance on all of the gun controversy going on and had a very strong opinion towards it.
“I’m a big believer in the second amendment and I don’t think in any way shape or form we should go about banning guns.”
He didn’t want to get the conversation heated so the topic got switched midway through. We started talking about how he thought his high school career went and how the college application process went.
“I have a lot of senioritis” was Jack’s answer how is senior was going.
As for the rest of his high school years he had some regrets and he had some criticism for Oliver Ames teachers.
“The teachers don’t really connect with the students very well” he also stated that he wished there were more consistent ways of teaching a curriculum because “sometimes teachers are all over the place.”
Getting back to Jack’s senior year being the oldest sibling the whole college thing was new to his family.
“I’m kind of like the guinea pig of my family. I’m the first one going to college, and I have all of this stuff to look up to and my parents get kind of worked up over it”. He went on to explain how stressful it was not just applying to school but picking which school to go to.
Being the oldest sibling comes with more responsibility, but it also comes with a little more freedom.
“My parents have more trust in me.”
He tries to set examples for his younger sisters even though “they get on my nerves very easily” talking about his two younger sisters.
For Jack it was more than just school work it was stuff outside of school too.
“I made so many more friendships than I would have expected” he’s happy with the relationships that were made during his years.
If there was one thing Jack wishes he could change it would be to have applied himself more.
“I never really put the effort in… I kind of regret that.”
From Mass maritime to love for his country, Jack Mills shows a true American character.
