Elizabeth Peckham, known as an unbelievable runner, believes that hard work and dedication are the key fundamentals of being ranked at the top of the leaderboards.
Sitting in Liz’s room (her close friends call her speedy legs) it was no surprise to find a wall covered in race numbers, trophies and ribbons from years past. She had on her usual outfit of athletic gear, being leggings with an Oliver Ames High School cross country pullover and running sneakers.
Elizabeth, being humble as ever, was reluctant when asked about her raw talent.
“I guess I was just born with it. I mean I love running so I think that’s why it comes easier to me. I work really hard to stay in running shape but I don’t go on scary diets; I eat what I want. I love McDonalds!”
It was clear from the start with the blinding toothy smile and the nervous laughter in between each answer that Liz does not like to talk about herself. However, She cannot hide her kind and compassionate side. She is a spiritedly fulfilled eighteen year old who has a soft spot for her parents who adopted her (Phil and Maria) and her dog (Dolly).
“Running is a big part of my life. I run mostly everyday and usually with my running friends. We don’t really have a set workout or anything we all kind of help each other. I’m one of the long distance track captains so I help out some of the girl’s and the rest of the team during practices and meets. I go crazy at the meets cheering them on, especially my sister!”
Halfway through the interview Liz got up to get a jacket because she was cold. An important part of being an athlete is listening to what your body is telling you. Running puts a lot of strain on the body and injuries are common if the athlete is not careful.
“I’ve had running injuries before. I had really bad shin splints once (acute pain in the shin and lower leg caused by prolonged running, typically on hard surfaces) and sometimes I have problems with my knees or hips hurting. This doesn’t happen a lot but when it does I have to ice a lot. When I have pains I ride the bike in the work out room.”
The topic of college and what the future brings made Liz get excited. She sat up a little straighter and turned more towards me when she talked.
“I’m so excited for college! I’m going to Merrimack College and I already have a roommate. I’ve known her for awhile we used to play basketball together on the AAU team. It makes me feel better that I already know my roommate because I know I’m going to miss all my friends from home.”
As she talked about going to college she twiddled her thumbs and looked around the room. College is a massive change and makes the average senior in high school quiver in their boots. Leaving everything you have been familiar with for about eighteen years is a monumental task.
“ I was so happy when I committed to college because I could stop worrying about it. I know a lot of people had to wait a long time to get accepted and stuff. I guess I got lucky to be able to commit so early. Running has been in my life for so long and I can’t wait to continue running for Merrimack. Go warriors!”
Sneakers have to be replaced every couple of months when you wear them to run everyday. Liz has a decent size collection of sneakers. She was not able to give the exact number of pairs she has gone through.
“ I’ve spent so much money on just sneakers. Having a good pair of running shoes is really important. I probably replace mine after every season because they get so worn out after wearing them that much. I have my running shoes that are usually my favorite brand Asics and then a ton of nike sneakers.”
The foundation of a fantastic athlete is consistency, when you practice everyday you are bound to get better. Liz Peckham’s strong work ethic molded her into an amazing runner.
