Katrina ‘Kat’ Rose Schultz, born January 31, 2000 is a senior at Oliver Ames High School. She is committed to go to Bridgewater State University and wants to pursue a writing major.
When asked why she wanted to travel so much, she explained that she wants to live in Harajuku, Japan more than she wants to travel. She said that she wanted to see Scotland and Germany because of her heritage. Katrina also explained that she is fascinated by the Gothic architecture in those two specific countries.
“While I’m still in college, I plan on going to Japan. It’s my dream and always has been. I want to travel because everywhere else is so interesting and different than in the United States. I want to see something that I’ll remember for my entire life.”
From Demi Lovato to Marilyn Manson, Post Malone to Neck Deep, Katrina enjoys listening to a wide variety of music. She will listen to Post Malone, rapping along, then she’ll switch and will start listening to different types of rock bands, such as the nu metal band Korn.
“Of course it has to do with the sound of the music,” she explained, “but it’s more about how you can connect to the artist and the songs they sing. I find it easy to connect to the artists I listen to. Their music speaks to me and I can’t help but relate to it. Whether it’s angry, about a break up, about love. It doesn’t matter.”
To Kat, music is everything. She said that she would rather be blind than deaf. In fact, her worst fear aside from having terrible teeth, is becoming deaf.
“It’s almost like there’s no point in living if you can’t listen to music. Think about it. Sure you can watch shows and movies with closed captioning on but you can’t listen to your favorite songs. (Talking directly to me) You can’t go to bands such Wage War, A Day to Remember or Metallica, and come out of the venue with your ears ringing and you can still feel the vibration from your seat. Then you can’t help but look at the person you went with and smile because it was just so awesome to see one of your favorite bands live. You won’t be able to hear any one of your role models. To me, that’s unthinkable.”
Seeing that she is so connected to music, I asked her if she would ever pursue music as a profession instead of writing. The response received was surprising because she has been into going to musicals since she was very young. She has been in every school musical since her sophomore year at Oliver Ames.. She has been in Seussical, The Addams Family, and The Wizard of Oz.
“If I would pursue music as my profession, I would do it in the form of songwriting. That way I can still get the feeling that I’m writing about the things that make me me.”
Then she explained why she loved writing so much. “I love to write. I feel free. I can make my own world, make my own characters, I can travel without moving away from home, it’s satisfying, therapeutic and I can write my feelings down on paper.” Katrina started to talk about a type of writing she might want to pursue. “You work for a hospital, go research a disease, go around the world, then write about it. Honestly it is the best of both worlds because I get to travel and I get to write.”
Katrina Schultz is a very unique person. It is rare to find someone so passionate about what they love, like she does. Music, traveling, and writing fill her life. She simply is someone who wants to live a happy life, doing what she loves.
