This is the Wood Report, which will be a weekly post about anything in the sports scene at Oliver Ames. The weekly reports will range from focusing on all sports during the season, certain teams, players, and even the fans.
This week, teams around the Hockomock League are preparing for the playoffs in all sports and our fall teams are really excited for their chances at the State Title.
Girls Soccer
Record 9-3-0 League 7-3-0
The girls under head coach Britt Sellmayer have excelled this season in a very very tough Hockomock league this year. Goalie Regan Benton has been amazing for the team even winning Hockomock Player of the Week honors. With two impressive early wins against Brockton and recent wins against teams like Milford and Taunton, the girls can easily be a top team once it comes playoff time.
Boys Soccer
Record 8-1-2 League 8-0-2
The sophomores that helped make the 2015 championship team are now experienced seniors and hungry for another chip. After the disappointing loss in the Playoffs last season, the Tigers are ready to make their third State Championship finals in 4 years and win 2 in 3 years. On Wednesday October 4th, the Tigers absolutely demolished Milford 5-1 with that one goal for Milford coming very late into the game. Senior captain Nathaniel Cardoza has been big for the 11 like he has been for the past 3 years and I am truly expecting this team to make a very deep playoff run.
Volleyball
Record 6-7 League 5-6
Volleyball had a very slow start to the season starting off 0-6. However a recent hot streak has helped our Lady Tigers with them winning 5 of the last 6 and looking to win more. I believe if they can keep with this hot streak, their confidence will help them make a great push for the playoffs and if they make it, have the potential to go deep especially with senior Kayla Raymond
Field Hockey
Record 7-2-2 League 6-2-2
With all the running this team does, it sure is working. Coach Tepper has created a dominant force in the Kelley-Rex division sitting happily at 2nd place just behind King Philip. Now this team consisting of players like Liz Nuzz who has scored 9 goals this season has been amazing these past weeks. Expect these tigers to go deep and win big.
Cross Country Boys and Girls
Both Records 2-2 Both League 2-2
The boys and girls Cross Country teams have had very identical seasons so far. Winning their first meet big against Franklin and narrowly beating Attleboro. With great runners like Zane Reservitz and Liz Peckham on both teams. I think the Hock Championship will be fun for this team with a chance to place high.
Golf
Record 9-0 League 6-0
Did we expect anything less from this team? Seriously I do not remember the last time this Golf Team took an L. Experienced upperclassmen Thomas Walsh, Ryan McGarry, and Liam Barry are shooting great and the team is also getting tremendous help from sophomore Tate Hodges who has been tearing it up. Another huge tilt at the Hockomock Championship and States is a definite for these golfers.
Football
Record 2-3 League 1-2
Football has had highest of success and the saddest of losses. Football came out strong with a season opening win against Bedford. However suffered two disappointing losses in close games to Silver Lake and Taunton. The team became determined entering as underdogs to a gunslinging Franklin team who nearly beat Mansfield. Under Anthony Berksza’s amazing league leading 10 touchdowns, the Tigers pounced the Panthers 40-22. However October 6th, the Tigers played their worst game of the season against Attleboro and have two more games for a chance at the playoffs against powerhouses King Philip and Mansfield.
