On August 24th, “Swifties” across the world got something they’d long been awaiting: new Taylor Swift music. On this day she released a single off her upcoming album “Reputation” called “Look What You Made Me Do” and since has also released another single titled “Ready For It.” If you know anything about Taylor Swift music, then you know that these songs are certainly… different.
It’s clear that the theme of Swift’s next album revolves around a new image that Taylor has either decided to create for herself, or that the world of fame has created for her. Either way, people have all sorts of mixed feelings about it.
Some people love the new music, declaring that they feel a sense of empowerment when listening to it and are proud of Taylor’s ability to directly confront her “enemies.” Others hate it and believe it is petty and immature of her to dwell on her past rather than move on with her life. Some just find the songs catchy and fun to listen to. Whatever their opinion may be, everyone seems to have one.
Many people are trying to figure out who exactly the songs (primarily the first one) are addressing. Guesses range from Taylor’s ex-friend Katy Perry who already has the song “Bad Blood” written for her, to Kanye West who has been in a long 8+ year battle with Swift for numerous reasons. Some even believe that she may be addressing her fans in the song, saying that they made her change who she was and the whole reason she went into music in the first place. Whether the song is about any one of these people, anyone else, or all of them together, the world may never know.
Furthermore, the release of the music video for the first single stirred even more confusion, as many believe it seemed that Taylor was essentially trying to make fun of herself and knows a lot more about what she’s doing than people think. After all, she did take all of her social media pages down about a week before the song release, and that can’t be a coincidence.
Perhaps the upcoming album will reveal a secret hidden meaning amongst all of this music and media and take the world by surprise, or maybe Taylor Swift really is just sick and tired of all the negativity thrown at her in recent times. When the album releases on November 10th, you’ll just have to decide for yourself.
